MV COMMUNICATIONS DOMAIN REGISTRATION

Domain Name FAQ

Q: What is a domain name?
A: For a short answer, it would be safe to say a domain name is a registered name that was designed for unique identification. It also helps simplify finding specific websites and can be an easily remembered email address.

Q: What is name service (DNS)?
A: DNS (Domain Name Service) is a directory service. Name servers hold records to point internet users to websites, email mapping, or any specific servers people may have. Every domain needs a DNS server answering for it. They are basically the machines that hold vital information for that domain.

Q: Do I automatically get a website with my domain name?
A: No. This is often an area of confusion. If you add a domain name to your MV account we do name service and email mapping as part of your basic hosting.

Q: What is email mapping?
A: Email mapping is basically directing your-email-name@domain.com to any pop box you have with MV Communications. You can have multiple email names pointing to one pop box if you wish. We can also provide mail forwarding to any email account on the internet.

Q: What does name service cost?
A: MV A $1.00 monthly charged will be applied for each domain MV provides name service. There is no additional monthly charge for the first domain.

Q: What is exclusive hosting?
A: An exclusive web service provides you with your own virtual server. This gives your web space its own unique IP address, ensuring that even older browsers browsers will work with it.

Q: What is a server alias?
A: A server alias is a redirection. When someone types www.your-domain.com we point them to your free 20MB of webspace in the /ipusers or /users tree. People need only type www.your-domain.com to get to your webpage. The address will change when a visitor gets the page. It will look something like www.mv.com/ipusers/username/

Q: Can I host my website myself and still keep MV for name service?
A: Yes. If MV Communications is doing name service we can point to any 'unique IP address' where your website resides. This maybe a choice for some business level DSL, Frame, or Leased Line customers.

Q: What are the addresses of MV Communications name servers?
